Art on the Town
South Haven Center for the Arts, in collaboration with the City of South Haven, announces that it is facilitating a new committee, called Art on the Town.
Art on the Town is tasked with developing a plan to select sculptures for the eleven plinths (pedestals) that were installed downtown as part of the 2013 Phoenix Street redevelopment.
Comprised of seven members of the community, the committee includes Ann Hemmeter and Sharon Guiltinan representing SHOUT, Sally Newton and Franny Martin representing the Downtown Development Association, Lyn Winkel representing the board of South Haven Center for the Arts, and South Haven sculptors Kathy Kreager and Lou Rodriquez. Executive Director, Thea Grigsby, will be facilitating the committee.
Art on the Town is committed to an open process that employs local artists to enhance downtown. The goal of the group is to create a cohesive theme that is meaningful to South Haven. The works should be safe, high quality, able to withstand outdoors and be of multiple media. The sculptures should be happy, approachable and family friendly.
To help start a dialogue, South Haven Center for the Arts currently has the work of seven different Michigan sculptors on display through the interior and exterior of our building. Citizens are encouraged to visit the art center and be a part of the process. Sculptures are on display through December 24.
As part of the process, the committee would like as much input from the public as possible. Notes of their monthly meetings will be located on the South Haven Center for the Arts website, www.southhavenarts.org or please contact any committee member and/or Thea Grigsby at thea.shca@gmail.com.
